These are my theories concerning Xenosaga. First off, these theories assume that Xenosaga will be some sort of Xenogears rewrite, and loosely follow Perfect Works. This is also a good time to mention that these theories will contain MAJOR SPOILERS for both Xenosaga and Xenogears. You have been warned.

This is the entry in the database about Kevin's grave:

grave
------
An image from Allen's recollection which he speaks of during a conversation at Durandal's observatory.

The vision is of Shion as she mourns at Kevin's grave two years ago. The grave itself is located at the central cemetery inside the Dammerung. The engraving on the headstone reads.

Kevin Winnicot
4739-4765
ecce universa terra coram te este recede a me obsecro

The latin text is a quote from the bible, they are Abram's words to Lot:

[is] not the whole land before thee? separate thyself, I pray thee, from me: if [thou wilt take] the left hand, then I will go to the right; or if [thou depart] to the right hand, I will go to the left. (genesis 13:9)

The emblem of the Galaxy Federation also reflect these same words.

Normally, I'd bring this up in a chaos/Kevin theory discussion, but there's something aside from the duality hints that's interesting about this quote.

Lot. For those who don't know their bible that well, Lot lived in a city called Sodom. And Sodom was full of evil people, so God decided to destroy it. However, He sent two angels to warn Lot's family to escape. The angels told them to run and not look back no matter what. But during the escape, Lot's wife looked back at the destruction and was turned into a pillar of salt.

Gnosis are composed of salt. Is it because they've sinned? Or have they transformed because they've seen something no human was meant to see? Salt is a mineral, part of the earth, so you could say that it's symbolic of being reduced back to their pure essense, just their souls. Which may be what happens when exposed to the Zohar, which is the gateway to the source of existance, the wave existance.

Sodom could symbolize Lost Jerusalem, aka Earth. They "sinned" by messing with something no one was meant to uncover, the source of creation, the Zohar.  According to the Xenosaga Design Materials, Earth slowly began to disappear after the Zohar was uncovered.  So humanity had to flee, and those who continue to look back at what caused the problem in the first place continue to be transformed into gnosis.

Weirdly enough, in the bible, the place Lot's family escaped to was a city called Zoar.  Now this from the game's database:

Zoar Incident
-------
The incident that triggered the massive war within the Federation, which culminated into the Miltian Conflict.

Although details pertaining to this incident are unknown, it was around this time that Cherenkov was born as a super soldier (biological weapon).

Maybe the only way to correct whatever imbalance was created is to return the Zohar to that place where it was contained back on Earth. And now it may be using a contact/anti-type to try to return it there. But everyone wants to use the Zohar for their own purposes...

But what are those mysterious purposes, those shadowy agendas?  Slowly getting there...

The Earth isn't destroyed, it just vanishes. For some reason, Mizrahi was trying to find the location of Lost Jerusalem. And Mizrahi founded U-TIC, which is also trying to find Lost Jerusalem.  So there must be some way of going back. Maybe his research was trying to find a way to restore it so humanity could return.

Mizrahi was also involved in research with the Zohar and created the emulators. The Zohar itself was what caused the Earth to disappear, and experiments with his emulators caused Ariadne to disappear. But in his experiments, which may have involved trying to find a way to reverse the Zohar's effects, he caused all the gnosis to appear.  Although we are told by Jr that the ghostly gnosis had been sighted, though rarely, since the beginning of time,  they didn't become a serious problem until Mizrahi.  It seems that he opened a gateway that flooded the gnosis into the mortal world.  This also seems to involve MOMO somehow...

Remember how KOS-MOS has those black boxes? Much like the black boxes from Xenogears, that ended up being slave generators for the Zohar? Now let's say that the black boxes in Xenosaga are the same.  We'll get back to this in a moment...

Now, what if the wave existance is basically what is referred to in the game as "pleroma." According to Jung, "pleroma" is the collective unconsciousness, or the nothingness that Cherenkov talks about when he dies. Basically a huge collection of souls as one entity, that is where people originate (wave existance) and where they go back to when they die. And the Zohar is the gateway to this.

So if the black boxes are like in Xenogears and they are powered by the energy (or in this case souls) that are taken from the pleroma... That means that the secret behind Vector's special black boxes which are part of every realian, Vector brand or otherwise, is a real soul.

Here's the game's database entry on realians:

Realian
-----
An artificial human.

A wonder of molecular bioengineering, its biological composition comes in various forms based on need, from carbon based duplicates of real humans to those based on silicon or liquid metal.  Many of the realians onboard the Woglinde were made by Vector, and they are hybrid models with a carbon/silicon base.

Since the Miltian Conflict, the alteration of a realian's emotions is no longer allowed.  The only exceptions are for realians in the military or other dangerous occupations, such as terraforming.

Their basic rights equal those of humans and are recognized by law.  However due to the fact that their minds are initialized with a slight bias, all realians tend to display similar personality traits.  This bias is applied not only for the purpose of preventing criminal behavior by realians, but also in consideration of humans who may feel threatened by their "superiority" (albeit only in certain specialized skills).

Several companies manufacture realians, but Vector makes the basic program (in other words the central nervous system) of all realians.

The program is essentially a black box, and any modification beyond regular maintenance and adjustments can only be performed by Vector.

Of course, Wilhelm would be behind this somehow...  KOS-MOS seems to be powered by this same pleroma energy, but is special since she has the all important Nephilim inside her, who is probably the will of the WE. And this would make the gnosis a bunch of souls that are disgruntled because they're displaced by all the messing with the Zohar.  (Remember the angry souls of Ariadne that hounded Cherenkov?)  So the will is trying to get Shion and the others to fix this mess.

But what's the purpose of the realians?

Well, Wilhelm's a business man.  One who keeps a Compass of Order on his desk.  And, according to my theory anyway, creates artificial people to house souls.

What if Wilhelm is trying to create his idea of a perfect, orderly world by taking complete monopoly of creation?  Maybe by controlling the Zohar and whatever, he intends to have all humanity replaced with realians, real souls under his utter control.  Unlike humans, realians are exactly what they are created to be, and have their freedoms limited by their programming, making them whatever their maker wishes them to be.

Maybe this was the problem with the old realians, they didn't want to be used and controlled anymore, so they rebelled.  So Wilhelm had "safety devices" implanted in the new models.   Much like the limiters in Xenogears, when Solaris needed a better way to control the grounddwellers (which they intended as nothing more than Deus parts).

This is why Febronia wants Shion to help the "realians as well as humans" because the realian souls are trapped.  And Nephilim, representing all the souls wants the unnatural order Wilhelm is creating to be stopped.  Because if something is not done to stop it, eventually all souls will become trapped like the realians.

When Wilhelm was with the Federation, he sure seemed busy moving legislation... He was quick to make sure the future production of realians wouldn't be hurt by the Miltian incident.  And maybe he was involved with the life recycling bill as well... Maybe he passed it to allow experimentation to be done more freely, so he could work towards creating the realians. Was it revoked after he left his government position? Maybe by that time he no longer needed it, or some other reason...

It could be that the last thing Wilhelm wants is for Lost Jerusalem to be found. Maybe if the Zohar is returned, the slave generator black boxes will no longer function, as in Xenogears when the Zohar was destroyed. If that happens, no more realians. Maybe he arranged for Mizrahi's death because he was trying to find Lost Jerusalem. And Wilhelm's no longer with the Federation, which is also looking for it with their Zohar Project.  He seems to want to get the Zohar before the others. On top of any other reason, that would keep it out of their hands. If he is somehow responsible for uncovering the Zohar on Earth (the circumstances surrounding the Zohar's discovery were suspicious, and Vector was supposedly around back then... remember that he is the company *founder*), he may have intended for humanity to abandon Earth, to make easier whatever agenda he is working towards. This also may have helped him become more powerful. Vector builds big tech. It was probably Vector-brand ships that humans went into space with. Vector probably had a big hand in terraforming new homeworlds and creating space colonies. This would give Wilhelm the extreme wealth and power to further his plans.

The Federation seems to be controlling the Zohar Project, but they are not completely free of outside influences.  First it was Wilhelm using them, and now it seems U-TIC has at least a small influence in the Federation, since one of the council representatives was talking to Margulis. Wilhelm may not need the Federation anymore (and we've seen during the Kukai fiasco that he can move in and counter them when he feels the need to), but the Federation's Zohar Project  may have a few U-TIC spies involved.  And may have for some time, trying to guide events in their interests. While Wilhelm just wants his idea of a perfect ordered realian world,  I think U-TIC and Albedo are looking to destroy mankind, making everything perfect again by joining everyone back with the pleroma.  It could be that Margulis plans to destroy all the new worlds, then choose a select few he considers worthy to return to Lost Jerusalem to create a better mankind. Unlike Albedo, he may not want utter destruction, but he wants something very close to it.  It seems like the sort of crazy thing Albedo would want, and apparently he's working with U-TIC because their agendas are similar.

The Federation is interested in finding Lost Jerusalem, but they'd have problems bringing it back from whatever dimension it disappeared to.  Maybe that's what they want with the Y-Data in MOMO, to see what solution Mizrahi might have had, as well as the location.

We don't know for sure what all the Y-Data contained. It was supposed to be *all* of Mizrahi's research, and we do know he was experimenting with the Zohars and searching for Lost Jerusalem. Even if Deus is involved in there somehow, we don't know exactly what he originally intended it for. It could be involved in the U-TIC plot to destroy all inhabited worlds to return everything to pleroma. If that was the original plan, it's possible Mizrahi had a change in heart and that's why he tried to hide the data. And why Kevin eventually betrayed U-TIC. And why Pellegri has doubts. The Federation itself may only be looking in the Y-Data for the location and solution to the disappearing problem. Their version of the Zohar Project may be a device that can restore Lost Jerusalem. That is if U-TIC isn't corrupting the project through underhanded means. Actually, I think this project could even be what Mizrahi originally had in mind, until Margulis took over and decided to change what Deus was intended for. Again, this could have led to Kevin's eventual betrayal, since he was loyal to Mizrahi.

So it could be that the original Project Zohar that Mizrahi was working on was meant to reverse what the Zohar had done to Lost Jerusalem, so humanity could return. The Federation also had interest in this, and this original idea is still what they're planning, but they lack all the information to do so, that's why they need the Y-Data.

But now Margulis has taken the same idea for Deus in the Zohar Project, and changed it so that now it's a planet destroyer. This way all humanity will be wiped out on all worlds, and returned to the source. This may also be one of the reasons they wanted KOS-MOS, with her 3rd Armament, she would have had this kind of power. But after everything fell through in the incident with Kevin, they may have started a backup plan with the whole T-Elos and Omega elements. The Omega mech seen in the trailer does resemble the Deus mech seen at the end of Xenogears.

It could be that KOS-MOS will be the Deus that Mizrahi originally intended, and ressurrect Lost Jerusalem. As she is, she probably isn't complete to do so yet. And Wilhelm has his hand in everything. He owns KOS-MOS, and probably feels confident that the project won't succeed while he has a leash on the whole thing. He may also need KOS-MOS and Shion to gain full control of the Zohar. If they are two aspects of the WE will the way I think they are, they could be essential to his controlling it. But there's still little Abel to deal with...

Virgil and Febronia

During scenes with Febronia and Shion, a little Christmas tune is heard, called Greensleeves.  You can see the complete lyrics here:
http://www.uidaho.edu/student_orgs/arthurian_legend/game/music/GreensleevesLyrics.htm

I think they're a big clue as to what happened between Virgil and Febronia.  The lyrics are about a man in love with a woman who doesn't return his feelings.

Remember that in the new legislation concerning realians, it was stated that realian emotions could no longer be tampered with.

What if Virgil and Febronia fell in love, but someone messed with her programming so that she was no longer in love with him. Maybe this just pointed out real hard to Virgil that realians were artificial creations, and he became extremely bitter.

Maybe this incident blew up past something personal, and eventually led to the Miltia incident.
